Pancha Parameshwara" most commonly refers to the five principal deities in the Smarta tradition of Hinduism, a non-sectarian path that views all major deities as different manifestations of the one ultimate reality (Brahman).

The practice, known as Panchayatana Puja (five-shrine worship), was consolidated by the 8th-century philosopher Adi Shankaracharya to unite the different warring Hindu sects of his time. The five deities worshipped are:

  1. Ganesha (remover of obstacles)
  2. Surya (the Sun god)
  3. Devi/Shakti (the Divine Mother in various forms like Durga, Lakshmi, Parvati)
  4. Vishnu (the preserver)
  5. Shiva (the destroyer/transcendent one)

A devotee can choose any one of these as their personal preferred deity (Ishta-devata) to place in the center of the altar, while the other four are arranged around it. This practice promotes harmony by emphasizing the underlying unity of all gods.
